Happy 2014, Internet!

 

 

As we begin a new year, I have been thinking a lot about all of my theatrical experiences in 2013. I feel extraordinarily lucky to be making a living in the theater and I am so grateful to be part of such a loving and supportive community of artists.

 

 

In January I had the good fortune to play the lead in the world premiere of Quincy Long’s “The Huntsmen” at Portland Playhouse in Oregon. This past Summer I returned to Vermont Shakespeare Company to play Autolycus (and the bear!) in their outdoor production of “The Winter’s Tale”. This Fall I became a teaching artist with Broadway.com, leading theater workshops for visiting school groups as part of their Broadway Classroom series. And I started performing in art galleries as an adaptive storyteller for Museum Hack, bringing pieces of art to life in unique and theatrical ways.

 

 

This year the press has called my performances “utterly fascinating” (The Oregonian), “mesmerizing” (Willamette Week), “hypnotic” (portland theatre scene), “expressive” and “engaging” (both Seven Days), “marvelous” and my favorite, “rubbery” (both Burlington Free Press).

 

 

A huge, heartfelt thanks to Portland Playhouse, the Barrow Street Theatre, Sundog Theatre, Going to Tahiti Productions, Vermont Shakespeare Company, Broadway.com, Performa 13, Museum Hack, and the TRUF for being my artistic homes in 2013. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that this new year will bring.

Exciting Times, Everyone! I am very happy to announce that my one-man show adaptation of “Hamlet” is being produced again, and just in time for the new year!

 

 

“Hamlet: A One-Man Show” will be produced by The TRUF at the Chain Theatre in Long Island City for three performances only:  Thursday January 9th, Friday January 10th, and Saturday January 11th. All performances are at 8:00Pm. More information can be found at The TRUF’s website.

I recently completed a sold out run of “Hands Off”, an original performance art piece created by Molly Lowe. The performances took place at Temp Art Space as part of Performa 13, co-presented with Recess. A special thanks to my invincible fellow performers, Caterina Nonis and Emily Vetsch, and to Molly Lowe for her crazy-cool vision.

I have three very exciting pieces of news to share!

 

 

First off, I have been hired as a teaching artist for Broadway.com’s Broadway Classroom series. I will be teaching workshops for visiting school groups on a range of theater-related topics. I am deeply honored to be joining Broadway Classroom’s talented and passionate team of professional educators. Click here for more information on the classes offered.

 

 

Nextly, I will be a performer in the experimental movement piece “Hands Off” next month. Created by the multidisciplinary artist Molly Lowe, “Hands Off” will be presented as part of Performa 13 on November 22nd and 23rd. I just returned from my second consecutive summer season with Vermont Shakespeare Company, and as you can see by the above picture by Jan Nagle, it was once again a total joy to work with this amazing group of artists. Playing Autolycus in “The Winter’s Tale” was a beautiful challenge: I got to sing, do lots of physical comedy, and perform Shakespeare outside! A fabulous experience.

Good day, Internet!

 

It is a time of beginnings and endings. Last month saw the end of two shows I was in: “Bella’s Dream” at  the Flamboyan Theater and “Upstanders”, which over the course of three months of performances reached thousands of children in Queens and Staten Island.

 

I am currently deep in rehearsals for “The Winter’s Tale” with Vermont Shakespeare Company. Autolycus is such a fun character and I am loving working with this ridiculously talented group of actors and designers. It is such a joy to return to Vermont Shakes for a second season. We open in less than two weeks in Burlington!

How You Doing, Internet?

 

 

I am happy to announce my Summer plans! In June I will be appearing in the new play “Bella’s Dream” produced by Going to Tahiti Productions at the Flamboyan Theater at Clemente Soto Velez Cultural and Education Center here in New York City. The play follows the true story of Bella and Raymond who, heeding a dream of Bella’s, flee Poland weeks before the Nazis invaded in 1939. I will be playing five different characters they encounter on their journey. The show runs June 18th through June 30th. For more information and tickets please click here.

 

 

Then in August I will be returning to Vermont Shakespeare Company with whom I played Caliban last Summer in “The Tempest”. This time around I will be playing Autolycus in “The Winter’s Tale”. Performances are August 8th – 11th and 16th – 18th in Burlington, Vermont and August 15th at Knight Point State Park in North Hero, Vermont. More information and tickets can be found here. Well hi there, Internet!

 

 

It’s been a busy month. My auditions and acting work have taken me to four out of five boroughs (I’m coming for you, Bronx!). My performance experiences have been eclectic and eccentric, from passing out flowers at a rooftop garden party wearing a goat mask (!), to operating a life-size baby T-rex puppet complete with blinking eyes and flicking tongue. My anti-bullying children’s show “UpStanders” continues to be performed in schools all across New York.
